The primary outcome was the proportion of presentations with severe agitation (Sedation Assessment Tool score >1) within 1 hour of naloxone administration. Secondary outcomes were the proportion of presentations with acute opioid withdrawal (tachycardia [pulse rate >100 beats/min], hypertension [systolic >140 mm Hg], vomiting, agitation, seizure, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, or pulmonary edema), and reversal of respiratory depression (respiratory rate >10 breaths/min and saturation >92% or Glasgow Coma Scale score 15). Results: From October 2019 to July 2021, there were 197 presentations in 171 patients, with a median age of 41 years (range, 18 to 80 years); of the total patients, 119 were men (70%). The most common opioids were heroin (131 [66%]), oxycodone (14 [7%]), and morphine (11 [6%]). Severe agitation occurred in 14 (7% [95% confidence interval {CI} 4% to 12%]) presentations. Opioid withdrawal occurred in 76 presentations (39% [95% CI 32% to 46%]), most commonly in the form of tachycardia (18%), mild agitation/anxiety (18%) and hypertension (14%). Three presentations (1.5%) received chemical sedation for severe agitation within 1 hour of naloxone administration. A single 1.6 mg dose of naloxone reversed respiratory depression in 192 (97% [95% CI: 94% to 99%]) presentations. Conclusion: Severe agitation was uncommon following the administration of 1.6 mg IM naloxone and rarely required chemical sedation.]]> Wed 05 Jul 2023 16:31:40 AEST ]]> A Randomised Controlled Trial Investigating the Effect of Improving the Cleaning and Disinfection of Shared Medical Equipment on Healthcare-Associated Infections: the CLEaning and Enhanced DisiNfection (CLEEN) Study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:50428 Tue 25 Jul 2023 18:54:37 AEST ]]> Perceptions and experiences of paramedics managing people with non-traumatic low back pain: a qualitative study of Australian paramedics https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:55144 Tue 16 Apr 2024 09:45:40 AEST ]]> Trainee doctors' experiences of common problems in the antibiotic prescribing process: an activity theory analysis of narrative data from UK hospitals https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:41335 Tue 02 Aug 2022 09:09:42 AEST ]]> Knowledge of, and participation in, advance care planning: a cross-sectional study of acute and critical care nurses' perceptions https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:32833 Thu 31 Oct 2019 11:12:11 AEDT ]]> Magnitude and determinants of obstetric case fatality rate among women with the direct causes of maternal deaths in Ethiopia: a national cross sectional study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37501 Thu 27 Jan 2022 15:58:52 AEDT ]]> Identifying the core components of a nursing home hospital avoidance programme https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:49992 Thu 22 Jun 2023 14:05:36 AEST ]]> Perceptions of midwives on the quality of emergency obstetric care at hospitals in Ethiopia: A qualitative explanatory study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:37502 Thu 17 Feb 2022 09:31:02 AEDT ]]> Pain Assessment and Management for Older Patients with Dementia in Hospitals: An Integrative Literature Review https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:43346 Thu 15 Sep 2022 15:18:57 AEST ]]> A literature review: readmission of older patients to the acute care setting https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:7686 Sat 24 Mar 2018 10:44:13 AEDT ]]> Older people in acute care https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:8661 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:38:43 AEDT ]]> What empirical research can do for bioethics https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:7100 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:37:47 AEDT ]]> Health service accreditation as a predictor of clinical and organisational performance: a blinded, random, stratified study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:9360 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:36:33 AEDT ]]> A randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a nurse-provided intervention for hospitalised smokers https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:1569 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:30:42 AEDT ]]> The role of pharmacoeconomics in formulary decision-making: considerations for hospital and managed care pharmacy and therapeutics committees https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:3028 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:30:01 AEDT ]]> Haemorrhage control in severely injured patients https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:21549 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:50:25 AEDT ]]> Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in hospitals: time for a culture change (letter) https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5313 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:45:59 AEDT ]]> Australian trauma care: time for change (editorial) https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:5329 15 from 16% to 13% during the 8-year study period (statistical significance not shown), the avoidable mortality rate remained unchanged at 25%!
